Abstract This session will examine the role of the internet in the management and administration of research projects. Rory and Ralph will cover the opportunities provided by the internet in survey projects using both online and traditional methods. He will address the resources that were required to manage the IBM case study project via the internet, compared to more traditional project management techniques. Specifically he will focus on three main issues: · Why has the internet been used in this area? Research challenges that had to be overcome and the reasons for developing web based tools · How has been this used? Practical examples of how the internet has been used to manage major international projects for IBM; web sites that have been developed to enable survey managers and co-ordinators to communicate design, sample, language, financial and methodological issues as well as research results · Where could this approach be used in the future? A review of potential research areas where this technique could be used.
